CFT Enrichment Scholarships

Jemima and Iona take part in World Cup Lacrosse Festival

World Cup Lacrosse Festival

Earlier this year we were lucky enough to be awarded the CFT Sixth Form Enrichment Scholarship which enabled us to participate in the U19 World Cup Lacrosse Festival which was held in Guildford in July 2017. We had been selected to represent England U19B in this Tournament which ran alongside the Women’s Lacrosse World Cup in which 25 countries competed, the biggest tournament yet.

The competition started with pool play and we had some good matches with victories over the Welsh U19 Team, a club team from Japan, England U19C, St Catherine’s, Patriots and DC Bear (both clubs from USA). We also had tight losses against very well drilled DC Hawk and PSS Elite. This meant that we were through to the quarter finals against DC Wolf. It was a really tense match that went to multiple periods of overtime. Luckily we came through that to face DC Hawk again. This was a much better match than when we had played them in the pool but we were unable to come away with a win, losing by one goal, putting us in 3rd place.

In the evenings we had team meetings and had feedback on our matches and performances as well as participating in a team building workshop on our day off which consisted of building a raft in our units (defence/attack) and then racing them around islands in a lake.

Alongside playing we could go and watch the World Cup games between and after our matches. We were able to watch Old Calne Girl Emily Knight who was captaining the Scotland team. We also joined up with the Senior England Development team to cheer on the Senior England team in their matches against Wales (Quarter Final) and then the USA in the semi finals and finally the Bronze Medal game against Australia. This final match was a highlight of the week despite the torrential rain, as after a very closely fought game and 3 periods of overtime, it was won on Golden Goal by England. This is the first time England have won a medal since 2005.

Throughout the week we were able to see what elite competition and performance entails and watch the best players in the world as well as being able to enjoy a high standard of competition and play ourselves.

We learnt a lot throughout the week and this was a fabulous experience and a great way to end our U19 England careers which would not have been possible without the support of the Calne Foundation Trust.
