Fauré’s Requiem - Old Royal Naval College Chapel, Greenwich - 28th November 2019

On Thursday 28th November, an audience of parents and supporters gathered in the Chapel of the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich for the eagerly-anticipated performance of Fauré’s Requiem. The piece was performed by St Mary’s Chamber Choir and Junior Consort, together with a choir of 25 tenors and basses from Eton College.

The pupils had rehearsed independently in the run-up, only collaborating on the afternoon of the concert itself. The effect of the 80-strong choir, combined with Mr Totney’s wonderful organ playing, was utterly sublime. The aesthetics of the Chapel complemented the beauty of the music supremely well, and were as inspiring to the girls as to the audience. Belinda (LVI Choral Scholar) sang the soaring soprano solo, Pie Jesu brilliantly. The Requiem was preceded by various other sacred choral works, four of which were written especially for upper voices, and showed off the girls’ magical sound particularly well. A favourite of the girls, the Cantique de Jean Racine was chosen to commence the proceedings, in a collaboration between the Chamber Choir and boys’ voices.

Audience members enjoyed post-concert drinks in the atmospheric undercroft beneath the Chapel (the former already dressed for Christmas!). During the day, before rehearsals commenced, the girls had enjoyed a local speciality for lunch – pie and mash (although not with the even more traditional eels!).

Musically, they rose to the occasion magnificently, and both acted and sang professionally from start to finish. The evening raised over £4,000 for military bursaries, the venue being particularly apt for this cause.

Mobile Climbing Wall event - 7th November 2019

On 7th November 2019 as part of our Climbing Wall fundraising initiative, the St Margaret’s playground saw the installation of a mobile climbing wall.

It was a fabulous day, there was a real buzz around the school and the weather was kind!
The children really seemed to enjoy themselves and there was a wonderful sense of excitement. It was great to see so many St Margaret’s staff and parents also scale the wall.
The children learned courage and perseverance as they traversed the wall and really rose to the challenge, managing to overcome any nerves.

We are now well on the way with fundraising for our own wall with this event raising nearly £3000 and we would like to thank you all for your continued support.

Bowood Drinks Reception - 13th September 2019

On the evening of 13th September, over 100 St Mary’s parents, alumnae and supporters gathered on the terraces of Bowood House to enjoy the late evening sunshine at a drinks party, hosted by Lord and Lady Lansdowne, to raise money for the St Mary's Calne Bursary Fund.

Guests enjoyed Champagne and a delicious selection of canapés, to the beautiful lilting vocals and keyboard accompaniment of Old Girl, Thea, whilst taking in the stunning vistas across the Bowood parkland. The evening was brought to a fitting close by Calne Foundation Trust Patron, Lady Lansdowne, who talked warmly of the long association between Bowood and St Mary’s Calne before handing over to Headmistress, Dr Felicia Kirk, who spoke passionately of the Trust’s objective in raising funds to support truly transformational bursaries.

Lisa Gates completes the London Marathon, raising funds for the CFT Bursary Fund

2019 Marathon 1

Mrs Lisa Gates, Calne Foundation Trust (CFT) Chairman ran the London Marathon on Sunday 28th April in aid of the CFT Bursary Fund which helps deserving girls whose family income might not otherwise stretch to cover school fees.

This is Lisa's account of the day:

The Virgin Money London Marathon 2019 took place on Sunday. The weather was perfect for running, and the crowd support was incredible! A new course record was set by Eliud Kipchoge, but most of us will remember this year’s marathon for the images of the runner who, in his Big Ben costume, couldn’t duck beneath the finish gantry to stumble over the2019 Marathon 2 timing mats and achieve a finish! My own marathon was great; I went out a little fast but the months of training got me a new personal best. Thanks to all the generous donations, my fundraising for the CFT Bursary Fund has reached £1,500 - if anyone would like to add to this I will be most grateful. Lisa Gates.
