A New Library

Our vision is to enable our girls to be creative, bold and analytical thinkers. We aim to create a first class facility at St Mary’s to support our outstanding teaching and learning and to encourage girls to work both collaboratively and independently. The new library will be a lively academic hub of the school - a place which will instil a love of reading, research and learning, encouraging exploration and the pursuit of knowledge, as well as collaboration and the sharing of ideas.

Library View from Orchard

There will be small breakout rooms as well as individual work spaces, informal areas as well as formal; it will have more in common with modern university libraries – not a completely quiet, controlled space but a place where the girls want to hang out, pursue their broad range of interests and make the most of the technology available.

The library will be a bright, airy, modern, comfortable, warm and fun space. It will be free from the stuffiness that one sometimes finds in many older libraries. Traditional library spaces can sometimes look like a repository for books as if one has not thought about those who use the space.

The new library at St Mary’s has been granted planning permission and enabling works started in summer 2018. For more information and to see plans and the architect’s Virtual Reality film of the library, please contact the Director of Development: cari.depla@calnefoundation.org
